Correlations in the Far Infrared Background
نویسنده
چکیده
We compute the expected angular power spectrum of the cosmic Far Infrared Background (FIRB). We find that the signal due to source correlations dominates the shot–noise for l <∼ 1000 and results in anisotropies with rms amplitudes ( √ l(l+ 1)Cl/2π) between 5% and 10% of the mean for l >∼ 150. The angular power spectrum depends on several unknown quantities, such as the UV flux density evolution, optical properties of the dust, biasing of the sources of the FIRB, and cosmological parameters. However, when we require our models to reproduce the observed DC level of the FIRB, we find that the anisotropy is at least a few percent in all cases. This anisotropy is detectable with proposed instruments, and its measurement will provide strong constraints on models of galaxy evolution at redshifts up to z ∼ 10. BLAST: CORRELATIONS IN THE COSMIC FAR-INFRARED BACKGROUND AT 250, 350, AND 500 μm REVEAL CLUSTERING OF STAR-FORMING GALAXIES
We detect correlations in the cosmic far-infrared background due to the clustering of star-forming galaxies, in observations made with the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST), at 250, 350, and 500 μm. Since the star-forming galaxies which make up the far-infrared background are expected to trace the underlying dark matter in a biased way, measuring clustering in the far...
متن کاملProbing Early Structure Formation with Far–infrared Background Correlations
The large–scale structure of high–redshift galaxies produces correlated anisotropy in the far–infrared background (FIRB). In regions of the sky where the thermal emission from Galactic dust is well below average, these high–redshift correlations may be the most significant source of angular fluctuation power over a wide range of angular scales, from ∼7′ to ∼3◦, and frequencies, from ∼400 to ∼10...

We have created a map of the large-scale infrared surface brightness in excess of that associated with the atomic interstellar medium, using region-by-region correlations between the far-infrared and 21-cm line surface brightness. Our study updates and extends a previous attempt with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite and Berkeley/Parkes H I surveys. The far-infrared observations used here are...
متن کاملAnisotropy Studies of the Unresolved Far-infrared Background
Dusty, starforming galaxies and active galactic nuclei that contribute to the integrated background intensity at far-infrared wavelengths trace the large-scale structure. Below the point source detection limit, correlations in the large-scale structure lead to clustered anisotropies in the unresolved component of the far-infrared background (FIRB). The angular power spectrum of the FIRB anisotr...
متن کاملConstraints on Dusty Star Formation at High Redshift from Ultraviolet, Far-infrared, and Radio Surveys
If high-redshift galaxies resemble rapidly star-forming galaxies in the local universe, most of the luminosity emitted by their massive stars will have been absorbed by dust and re-radiated at far-infrared wavelengths that are largely inaccessible to ground-based observations. The bolometric luminosity produced by star formation in distant galaxies must be estimated indirectly through empirical...
